Before your blood draw: what to ask about fasting, medicines, and results

Have they told you that you have to fast for this test? If so, this means that you have to abstain from any food or drinks (besides plain water) for a certain amount of time. You can save your coffee until after your draw. Black coffee isn't allowed; removing milk and sugar from coffee isn't going to make it okay during your fast. Don't chew gum, smoke, or exercise during your fast.

Having your test order ready when you call the office will help you ask about the tests you are actually having, some of which require a fast and some of which don't. If you are required to fast, ask how long this will be and follow their instructions. If you eat or drink anything other than plain water when you are supposed to be fasting, tell the office before the draw. They may need to reschedule. They can decide whether to proceed with the test.

You should also ask about your prescription and over-the-counter medications. Tell your clinician about any vitamins or supplements you are taking. Don't stop, change, or skip any medication unless your provider tells you to. More information on fasting blood tests can be found at MedlinePlus.

Anling Health's weekday lab hours start at 8:30 a.m. in Sunrise and 9 a.m. in Coconut Creek. Fasting draws are only done in the morning. To see if your particular draw can be arranged there, check with your preferred office and ask when to arrive.

Ask about the current charge and any outside lab bills. Laboratory work is billed separately from the self-pay visit, and the cost depends on the tests that your clinician orders.

Before your draw, ask how you will receive your results and who will review them with you. Find out when you can call to check on your results if you haven't heard back. A sample taken in the office isn't always tested there, so don't count on getting all your results on the same day.
